SYMPHONIC FILMWORKS BRINGS WORKFLOW AND VISUAL EFFECTS EXCELLENCE TO BEST MUSIC VIDEO AT 4th ANNUAL OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL’S ‘MUSIC VIDEO CHALLENGE’;
Shannon Rose & The Thorns ‘Little Bird’ Tops the Shortlist for International Awards Honoring Best of Music Videos;
OTTAWA, ONT. — October 8, 2013 – Mylene Paquin, President and Creative Director of RiverMist Productions (a sister brand to Symphonic Filmworks), announced today that her production of Shannon Rose & The Thorns ‘Little Bird’ has been awarded the Best Music Video in the 4th Annual Ottawa International Film Festival’s ‘Music Video Challenge’. Hailed as “The best showcase of musical and filmmaking talent”, The Music Video Challenge, presented by the Ottawa International Film Festival, is the premier showcase for Ottawa’s cutting edge collaborations between buzz-worthy independent bands and world-class independent filmmakers. The judging panel was comprised of industry experts from print, radio and film. These included The Bear 106.9FM radio hosts McCord & Kaz, Ottawa Citizen Arts Editor Peter Simpson, and celebrated digital filmmaker and illustrator Bradley Cayford.
Shannon Rose & The Thorns ‘Little Bird’ revolves around the singer’s journey wandering from one beautiful, nature-filled location to another, encountering the seemingly omnipresent symbolism of a little bird in each region. It’s a lullaby dedicated to the inspiring nature of a little bird to Shannon Rose. Principal photography took place in the summer of 2013 in Bruce Peninsula and Tobermory, Ontario, as well as several locations in the Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec region. Symphonic Filmworks brought their vast experience in on-set, digital filmmaking workflows as well as practical and computer generated visual effects to bring Paquin’s beautiful vision to screens everywhere in brilliant alignment with her creative goals. Post-production was completed at Symphonic Filmworks just a few weeks after filming.
“I believe that Mylene’s work combined with that of Shannon Rose and the Thorns was a paramount example of the possession of perfect harmony in elegantly portraying what it must be like to be a bird, and thus feeling the wind drifting delicately in constant movement graciously through nature.” said Bradley Cayford. “It spoke to me and surely spoke to the entirety of it’s audience and thus, it was most deserving of the award for Best Music Video at the Ottawa International Film Festival 2013. Congratulations, Mylene and Shannon Rose for your wonderful work.”
“It was a treat to see so many music videos competing in the music video challenge last night but Mylene’s music video definitely stood out as a representative of what the film industry here in Ottawa is capable of.” said Samantha Everts, music consultant at YouRockRed. “It showed great technical skill in the composition of shots, lighting and editing, but also great thought and care in capturing Shannon Rose’s delightful indie-folk song Little Bird.”
“I had the pleasure of working with Kevin Friel at Symphonic Filmworks during the post-production phase of my music video, and it truly is always such a delight to work with that boutique company. They were extremely efficient and delivered a better end result than I ever anticipated, especially where the CG bird is concerned!” said Mylene Paquin after receiving her award. “I have encountered people that have told me how lucky the timing was during filming, to have the bird fly by. Little did they know it was computerized! That’s how real it looked.”
“Mylene’s vision was an exciting challenge for us to take on at Symphonic Filmworks. To enhance the grace and beauty that is her signature style with our industry leading workflows, combined with the ingenuity of our practical and CG effects work, therefore creating a unified end product that is subtle yet awe-inspiring all at the same time.” said Kevin Friel, Post-Production and Visual Effects Supervisor at Symphonic Filmworks. “I’m really proud of our collaboration, and how easy the entire process was for everyone involved! The end result is truly stunning.”
Filming took place in July of 2013 using Canon 5D mkiii cameras and Canon L-Series lenses. Post-production was performed at Symphonic Filmworks using Autodesk’s 3DSMax with Mental Ray for animating and rendering the CG bird shot, and was composited and tracked to the live action wide-shot in Adobe’s After Effects CC. Editorial, conforming and color-correction took place in Adobe Premiere CC, with Red Giant Software’s Magic Bullet Looks and Denoiser II plugins.
Mylene Paquin was honored at the fast-paced and eclectic event on Sunday, October 6th, 2013 at Mansion Night Club in Ottawa, where challengers had the opportunity to showcase their works while networking with industry professionals. Highlights from last year’s challenge included ‘Fevers – Passion Is Dead’, ‘Flight Distance – Blanket Party’ and ‘Hilotrons – Emergency’.
